Mike's house will be shining brightly again for children’s hospice this Christmas

A South Devon granddad will be helping to add a welcome dose of festive cheer to his village this December when he flicks the switch on a colossal Christmas lights display at his home in Churchstow.

Mike Langman is already hard at work decorating his house in time for the big switch on at 4.30pm on December 1, and the former ambulanceman hopes this year’s display will shine brighter than ever in aid of his chosen charity Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW).

Since 2002, Mike’s lights have helped raise more than £50,000 for the charity, which offers vital hospice support to hundreds of children

Despite the pandemic, Bathavon Rotary Club is continuing to actively support projects in the community and has generously donated £5,000 to Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW).

Bathavon Rotary Club Secretary, Michael Wood, has been aware of CHSW’s work for over a decade. He said: “I used to live in North Devon and, along with friend from Braunton Rotary Club, was a volunteer gardener at CHSW’s Little Bridge House hospice. The work they do across the South West is vital and as such is a well-deserving cause.”

On Friday 13 November The Willingham family, supported by Little Harbour children's hospice, featured on the BBC Children in Need appeal show.

The story followed the journey of sibling Betsy as she dealt with a range of emotions when her parents contracted Coronavirus meaning that her brother Lucas, who has complex medical needs, had to be cared for at Little Harbour while their parents recovered.

Betsy explained her worries and talked about how her contact with Sibling Worker Suzanne helped her through those difficult times.

People in North Devon are being invited to remember someone they love this Christmas, while supporting the vital work of the region’s two hospice charities.

For 24 years, the annual Light Up a Life appeal has given people the chance to come together and light a candle in memory of loved ones at a series of special church services in support of North Devon Hospice (NDH) in Barnstaple, and Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) in Fremington.

And while this December’s services are unable to go ahead due to the coronavirus pandemic, the charities hope that people will join them at virtual Light Up

Whirlwind Sports Encourage Santas to Freestyle

Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) is excited to announce that it will be working in partnership with Whirlwind Sports for its Santas on the Run goes Freestyle FREE virtual event this December.

CHSW’s festive fundraiser usually sees hundreds of Santas running around RHS Rosemoor, Bristol Harbourside and Eden to raise vital funds for CHSW and its children’s hospices; Little Bridge House, Charlton Farm and Little Harbour. This year, due to the pandemic, the event is taking place virtually 11 – 13 December and Whirlwind Sports is once again supporting the event as a community partner.

Professional Apprenticeships, based in Filwood Green Business Park in Bristol is partnering with Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) making a donation for every successful placement of an apprentice before the end of the year.

The #1894Challenge will see members of the Robins backroom team attempt to clock up 1,894 kilometres between them before December 18th via exercise compliant with Public Health guidance on COVID-19.

Local company helps hospice volunteers with PPE distribution

Volunteers in North Devon helping to distribute vital PPE equipment to hospices across the South West have been given a helping hand by a local removal firm.

Essential PPE supplies, including face masks and shields, hand gel, aprons and clinical waste bags are delivered to Children’s Hospice South West’s Little Bridge House children’s hospice in Fremington, where it is processed, repackaged and sent to 10 other adult and children’s hospices, including North Devon Hospice in Barnstaple

John's Noughty Challenge

Although new to running, John Taylor from Henbury in Bristol is attempting to cover 10 kilometres a week for 10 weeks in support of Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW).

John age 72 started running during the first lockdown with the aid of a ‘couch to 5k’ app. Having completed the running plan, John continued to run greater distances and has been challenged by his wife, Kate, to use his new-found hobby to raise vital funds for a charity close to their hearts.

Children’s Hospice South West’s (CHSW) Memories by Moonlight virtual event has raised £26,000 for the charity that has seen a considerable drop in income due to the pandemic.


Memories by Moonlight was sponsored by National Friendly and was made into a regional, virtual event when the physical event usually held as a memory walk in Falmouth, Cornwall had to be cancelled this year.
