New rose created to celebrate 30th anniversary of Children’s Hospice South West

A new variety of rose has been created to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Children’s Hospice South West.

The ‘Precious Lives’ rose was specially grown by rose expert David White, Managing Director of Bedfordshire-based World of Roses.

David also created the ‘Jill Farwell’ rose in memory of the charity’s co-founder following her death in 2004.

CHSW area fundraiser Heidi Roberts said the new magenta-coloured rose was named by the charity in recognition of the care it provides to help families make the most of short and precious lives at its three hospices, Little Bridge House near Barnstaple

Taunton’s Rural Living Show back this month in aid of children’s hospice

The Rural Living Show is making a welcome return to the prestigious King’s Hall School in Taunton on November 27 and 28 in support of Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW).

Now in its 28th year, the event has become a firm favourite in the Somerset festive calendar and will once again showcase the best the region has to offer in high quality and unique artisan craft, homeware, fashion, textiles, art, design, fragrance and beauty.

Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) is inviting people to a festive afternoon of Christmas fun and treats at Tucker’s Grave Inn’s new Parlour café.


The Christmas Fair in Faulkland on Sunday 28 November from 2-5pm in the Parlour café will help CHSW provide support and care to families of children with life-limiting conditions.


Mince pies, mulled wine and a selection of hot drinks and goodies will be on offer, with stalls from local businesses and crafts people.

Gordano Students give back for Children’s Hospice South West

Gordano Year 8 student Cian Redman has set himself a challenge to climb the height of Mount Everest over the winter months to raise money for Children's Hospice South West. Along the way he is involving friends, family and members of his rugby team - Gordano Sharks u13s.

A big shout out to his fellow Gordano students Xander Welsh, Zak Howells, and Lucas Manning who have all supported him on his first walk by climbing and Pen Y Fan over half-term. The five of them clocked up 1,122m.

Care team member to walk over hot coals for charity

A member of the Care Team at the local children’s hospice is going out of their comfort zone by braving a Firewalk for the charity.


Sarah Turnbull from Worle will face the challenge of walking bare foot over hot coals at temperatures of 1200˚F.


Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) is bringing the Firewalk to The Galleries in Bristol on Thursday 11 November and hoping to raise funds from the event which will go towards supporting local families at its Charlton Farm hospice in Wraxall.

Families currently receiving care and support from Children’s Hospice South West’s Little Harbour at St Austell enjoyed a special morning making memories at the new Tunnel of Lights attraction at Charlestown’s Shipwreck Treasure Museum. The team at the award-winning attraction provided complimentary and exclusive access to families with a child with a life limiting condition to their newly opened immersive experience. Lydgate House Hotel at Postbridge on Dartmoor recently took part in The Big South West Cream Tea to raise funds for Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.

Guests enjoyed sampling their scones and tea on the terrace of the late Victorian country house which has stunning views over Dartmoor, and raised £107 for CHSW in the process.

Beach yoga sessions benefit children’s hospice

Beach yoga classes in Bude have helped raise £350 for Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW).

The regular morning sessions on Summerleaze beach have been run by yoga teacher Claire Jennings since the spring and have carried on into the autumn thanks to the recent spell of good weather.

Claire said the socially-distanced classes have been a great way for people to be able to get together again safely as Covid lockdown rules eased this year.

“Beach yoga classes are so good for the soul, with sandy toes, sunny hearts and the ocean as your backdrop,” she said.

Teddies to offer comfort to children supported by hospice

Staff at Children’s Hospice South West’s Charlton Farm in North Somerset were delighted to receive 72 teddies from charity, Teddies for Loving Care (TLC).


TLC, operated by and funded with donations from Freemasons, donates teddies to A&E departments and hospices in their specific regions.


Richard Ellis and Roger Penny, the TLC coordinator for Somerset and both members of Somerset Freemasons, were keen to ensure that Charlton Farm in Wraxall – Somerset’s only dedicated hospice facility for children - received the teddies.
