Fundraising fit for a Queen

The Queen’s Head in St Stephen near St Austell truly got into the Jubilee spirit over the Bank Holiday weekend and raised £1236.50 for a worthy, local cause in the process.

The pub organised a range of activities over the weekend which were all aimed at not only bringing the community together and celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee but also raising vital funds for Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW).

Heller's hospice fundraiser

Camborne funny man and running enthusiast Steve Heller has taken on his latest running challenge all in the name of Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW).

Steve Heller, best known for his facebook page ‘Cornish News’ sharing memes and jokes about Cornish life and visitors to the county, is also a keen runner and on 1 June completed a 32 mile ultramarathon from Camborne to St Ives and back, raising £2530 for CHSW. This brings Steve’s fundraising total for the charity to an impressive £10,300.

It wasn’t all plain sailing for Steve though as he tripped and fell at mile 24, leaving him 8 miles

Businesses invited to join ‘roarsome’ Bear Hunt art trail

North Devon is set to host an exciting public art sculpture trail this year designed to raise vital funds and awareness for Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW).

The charity, which runs three children’s hospices, including Little Bridge House in Fremington near Barnstaple, has joined forces with The Art of Fundraising to create a Bear Hunt art trail that will run throughout September and October.

Some of the region’s best-known local artists are currently decorating 25 individual five-foot-tall bears that will form a series of mini trails in around Barnstaple, Bideford, Torrington, Ilfracombe

Rainbows descend and bring gold for CHSW

Escot Park near Ottery St Mary and RAF St Mawgan near Newquay were given colourful makeovers recently as families from across the region took part in Children’s Hospice South West’s (CHSW) Rainbow Runs.

Thousands of people ran the colourful 5k events, raising thousands of pounds to help provide vital care for local children and young people with life-limiting conditions. Participants old and young ran through different coloured paint stations and crossed the finished line covered in all the colours of the rainbow.

Silent Beavers raise £1000

The 27th Plymouth Beavers group has raised £1000 for Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) following a sponsored silence.

18 boys and girls from the group, based at Shaugh Prior on the edge of Dartmoor, took part in the 20 minute sponsored silence supported by friends and family digging deep to offer generous sponsorship.

The Tavistock Pop-Up School Shop’ has recently donated £3779 to both Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) and The Primrose Foundation, following a bumper start to the shop.

The shop was set up by Abigail Underhill following the closure of Mount Kelly College’s second hand uniform shop. Abigail started the shop in the old games room of the Trout and Tipple and asked for donations of pre-loved Mount Kelly uniform, sports kit and equipment which would then be sold on to other pupils at the school with the money being shared between the two charities.

A duo of intrepid North Devon RAF veterans are preparing to take to the skies again to raise money for two charities that are close to their hearts.

Ray Hales and Arthur Bennett, from Barnstaple, have a combined age of 184. But next month, the daredevils will prove that their years are no barrier when Ray, 94, steps onto the wings of an aeroplane, and Arthur, 90, jumps out of one!

Glass artists to create special charity bauble at event in Bath

Bath Independent glass production company, Bath Aqua Glass will be creating a brand-new glass bauble in support of Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) during a very special fundraising evening this month.

The ‘Precious Glass for Precious Lives’ charity event at Bath Aqua Glass’ Walcot Street studio will take place on Thursday, June 23, from 7pm. It will feature glass blowing demonstrations, drinks and nibbles, live music as well as the chance to buy raffle tickets and bid for the first CHSW bauble, which will be blown using specially chosen coloured glass that reflects charity.

Bristol hotel manager clocks up the miles ahead of ultra marathon

Damien Martin, General Manager of Bristol’s Harbour Hotel is clocking up some serious hours of training ahead of taking part in the BagYard ultra marathon in September.

The event, which will be held in Chilthorne Domer, Yeovil, requires participants to run 4.167 miles, every hour for as long as possible. The winner will be the last one standing and Damien is hoping he will be able to reach the 24-hour mark.

Damien’s current training plan sees him completing some 40-80km a week, with plenty of Bristol’s great running routes being tested most days.
