Bristol hotel manager clocks up the miles ahead of ultra marathon

Damien Martin, General Manager of Bristol’s Harbour Hotel

Damien Martin, General Manager of Bristol’s Harbour Hotel is clocking up some serious hours of training ahead of taking part in the BagYard ultra marathon in September.

The event, which will be held in Chilthorne Domer, Yeovil, requires participants to run 4.167 miles, every hour for as long as possible. The winner will be the last one standing and Damien is hoping he will be able to reach the 24-hour mark.

Damien’s current training plan sees him completing some 40-80km a week, with plenty of Bristol’s great running routes being tested most days.

Alongside his training regime, Damien is also fundraising hard to raise as much as he can for two charities he is passionate about supporting; Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) and Room to Reward.

CHSW runs three children’s hospices including Charlton Farm in Wraxall. The hospice provides care and support to children and young people with life-limiting and life threatening conditions, as well as their families.

Room to Reward is a charity set up to thank volunteers for being hidden heroes by matching them up with unsold hotel rooms so they can be treated to a luxurious break to show gratitude for their hard work for special causes. The Harbour Hotel is one of the partnering hotels for this scheme.

When asked why Damien chose the BagYard ultra marathon for his challenge he said: “I have always been really active and loved running.

I feel really privileged to be in a position where I am able to raise money for those that are not able to themselves and make a difference to people’s lives doing something I love.

“Both charities I am raising money for are doing amazing work; Room to Reward in the hospitality and volunteer industry and CHSW is a charity we have worked with closely here at Bristol Harbour Hotel and continue to do so.”
