British Corner Shop to partner with Children’s Hospice South West

British Corner Shop has announced Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) as its charity of the year.


The online grocery store for British expats around the world, which is based in Yate, South Gloucestershire, has chosen to support CHSW in 2021, the charity’s 30th anniversary year.

Somerset shopkeeper's book is a trip down memory lane

John Barkle, age 86 from Wells in Somerset has written his first book called ‘Memories of a Village Grocer’ and it has been met with high praise.

The book recounts John’s days as a young boy in Ditcheat, his years in the shops in Pilton and Wells, his amateur dramatics in Croscombe, to his retirement and beyond. It’s been described as ‘beautifully written, full of anecdotes and village characters; a must read for anyone who remembers shopping in Barkles or who loves village life’.

To his delight, John’s first print run of 150 sold out quickly and another 250 are currently being printed.

Football Club takes on UEFA Challenge

Swiss Valley Rangers Football Club based in Clevedon, North Somerset, has decided to set its members a huge physical challenge whilst encouraging them to raise funds for local charity, Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW).

Each team that takes part will collectively attempt to rack up enough kilometres through walking, running, or biking, to visit each of the UEFA Euro 20/21 host cities in sequence. This amounts to 11,375km in total

Keen Plymouth runner and fundraiser Leesa Pethick is organising a virtual 10k event to raise vital funds for Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) in it’s 30th anniversary year.

Leesa is encouraging people to complete 10k however they wish; running, hopping, skipping, walking, even paddle boarding between 7 – 21 March 2021. There is a £7 entry fee for the event, everyone taking part will receive a celebratory medal and certificate after completing their 10k and all profits will be donated to CHSW.

Strictly Come Biking for Karen through Lockdown

For anyone who says you cannot look glamorous while exercising in lockdown, Karen Lane is putting them to shame as she is currently two weeks into her Strictly Come Biking challenge.

Karen, usually known for teaching all styles of dance to all ages at Dance Factory in St Austell and Trewoon, has swapped the dancefloor for a static bike and has set herself a Strictly Come Biking challenge.

Karen aims to cycle at least 20km everyday on her static bike while wearing a different ballgown each day, all in the name of raising vital funds for Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW).

Julie Completes Triple January Charity Challenge

Julie Cherry, from Par near St Austell in Cornwall, has recently raised over £270 for Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) after completing her triple January challenge; running everyday in January, Veganuary and Dry January.

Key workers at a North Devon pharmacy have been going above and beyond during the Covid pandemic.

As well as ensuring customers have been able to continue to pick up vital prescriptions, staff at the Bear Street Pharmacy in Barnstaple have sold homemade face masks to raise hundreds of pounds for Children’s Hospice South West, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2021.

South West accountancy practice names CHSW as charity of the year in 2021

Thomas Westcott has named Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) as the company's first ever charity of the year.

The independent accountancy practice, which had 17 offices across Devon and Somerset, has chosen to support CHSW in 2021, the charity’s 30th anniversary year.

Partner and head of the firm’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) team Ian Huggett said the firm's 250 members of staff were being encouraged to take part in the charity’s events, as well as organise their own fundraising activities.

There is no doubt John Burge’s Christmas lights raised many smiles in his home-town of Worle. John once again transformed the front of his house in Spencer Drive into a vintage toy shop to raise money for Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW).
