Fearless RAF veterans prepare for lift-off on latest high-flying fundraising challenge

A duo of intrepid North Devon RAF veterans are preparing to take to the skies again to raise money for two charities that are close to their hearts.

Ray Hales and Arthur Bennett, from Barnstaple, have a combined age of 184. But next month, the daredevils will prove that their years are no barrier when Ray, 94, steps onto the wings of an aeroplane, and Arthur, 90, jumps out of one!

Glass artists to create special charity bauble at event in Bath

Bath Independent glass production company, Bath Aqua Glass will be creating a brand-new glass bauble in support of Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) during a very special fundraising evening this month.

The ‘Precious Glass for Precious Lives’ charity event at Bath Aqua Glass’ Walcot Street studio will take place on Thursday, June 23, from 7pm. It will feature glass blowing demonstrations, drinks and nibbles, live music as well as the chance to buy raffle tickets and bid for the first CHSW bauble, which will be blown using specially chosen coloured glass that reflects charity.

Bristol hotel manager clocks up the miles ahead of ultra marathon

Damien Martin, General Manager of Bristol’s Harbour Hotel is clocking up some serious hours of training ahead of taking part in the BagYard ultra marathon in September.

The event, which will be held in Chilthorne Domer, Yeovil, requires participants to run 4.167 miles, every hour for as long as possible. The winner will be the last one standing and Damien is hoping he will be able to reach the 24-hour mark.

Damien’s current training plan sees him completing some 40-80km a week, with plenty of Bristol’s great running routes being tested most days.

Four year old fundraiser Sienna ready for Rainbow Run

Four year old Sienna Tindale from Threemilestone has raised £1,245 ahead of Children’s Hospice South West’s (CHSW) Rainbow Run returning to RAF St Mawgan on Saturday 18 June.

With each participant only required to raise £20 in sponsorship Sienna has well and truly smashed her target.

Sienna will be taking part in the Rainbow Run with her Dad and will be alongside more than 800 others who will be running and walking the 5km and getting covered in powder paint of all colours of the rainbow.

Morley match raises over £400

£420 was raised for Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) at the Morley Rangers charity football match on Saturday 14 May.

The match was played and money raised in memory of Oliver Brown who was known to lots playing in the match, many being coaches and managers of the various Morley Rangers teams.

Match organiser Jay Hensman said; “We knew Oliver and his family really well and this is probably the sixth match we have played to raise money for the charity. This match was against a group of dads and lads who play football with each other on a Monday night to keep fit and it was great to do it

Hundreds of fun runners will be taking part in Children’s Hospice South West’s (CHSW) colourful Rainbow Run at Escot Park near Ottery St Mary this month.

The popular family-friendly 5k takes place on Father’s Day (June 19) and for one local dad supported by the charity’s Little Bridge House children’s hospice in North Devon, every step around the stunning 5k course will be filled with emotion.

Newquay Rowing Club is looking for teams to take part in its sponsored gig row in Newquay harbour on Sunday 10 July supporting Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW). This is an annual event which has been put on hold since the pandemic but everyone involved is excited for its return this summer.

The event offers groups of friends, colleagues, sports teams or family to give gig rowing a go in this friendly sponsored charity event. To take part teams are required to supply three novice rowers and the other three rowers and the coxswain in your gig will be supplied by Newquay Rowing Club.

The team at Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) is celebrating winning the Charity award at last week’s glitzy Bristol Life Awards ceremony.

CHSW was in a hotly contested category, nominated alongside 12 other charities, all doing vital work in the city; Alive Activities, Billy Chip Community Interest Company, Bristol Autism Support, Bristol City Robins Foundation, Caring in Bristol, Creative Youth Network, FareShare South West, Great Western Air Ambulance Charity, The Sky Project, South Bristol Youth, St Peter’s Hospice and Young Bristol.

Boxlocal scone and tea hamper created in support of children’s hospice

Bristol-based artisan food hamper company Boxlocal has joined forces with Children’s Hospice South West to offer customers a delicious deal on a Great British classic.

The company is supporting CHSW’s Big South West Cream Tea by donating 10 per cent from the sale of a bespoke scone and tea box specially created in support of the charity.

The premium hamper includes fruit scones, tea bags and strawberry jam. There is even a china mug made by Stokes Croft in Bristol.

Local businesses backing return of Rainbow Run

Six local businesses joined Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) at RAF St Mawgan last week ahead of the return of the charity’s Rainbow Run next month which they are all sponsoring.

The main sponsor of the event is Ann’s Cottage; the largest retailer of surf wear and accessories in Cornwall, and joining as paint station sponsors are The Lost Gardens of Heligan, Moose Toys, Steve Andrews Tyres, Happy Days and Biffa.

After a two year hiatus the CHSW team cannot wait to bring the event back to St Mawgan on Saturday 18 June and having the support of these businesses guarantees even more money
