Media Officer attending CHSW event
A Q&A with Sophie Lerwill, Media Officer for Little Bridge House
Sophie tells us about her role at CHSW and what she loves most about her job as Media Officer.

Tell us about your job working in Marketing? What’s your typical day/week

I have been working in the Marketing Team at CHSW for almost 5 years now! Initially as a part-time Marketing Assistant and now as a full-time Media Officer.

My week is always really varied from writing press releases and doing social media posts to promoting our fundraising events and talking to one of the families that are supported by the charity to tell their family story. Some days I am out and about filming and taking photos at our shops or event locations and others I will be at the office at Little Bridge House for meetings and catching up with the rest of the Marketing Team. It’s a role I really enjoy as no 2 days are the same.

What do you enjoy most about working at CHSW and/or in Marketing?

I have always enjoyed working in marketing roles but at CHSW you feel as if the work you are doing is making a difference and doing something important to help children and young people here in the South West.

Another part of my role that I enjoy is getting to work with different teams across the whole charity. One day I might be talking to an Area Fundraiser about an upcoming event that we need to promote and the next a nurse on the Care Team.

What motivated you to apply to your role?

I decided to apply for the role of Media Officer as I had been working in the Marketing Team as a Marketing Assistant for over 3 years and was looking to develop my career but stay at CHSW. When the Media Officer role became available, I jumped at the chance and following the application process and interview I was pleased to be offered the job last year. It is a hybrid role where I work both at home and in the office at Little Bridge House which I find gives me great work/life balance being a busy mum of 3.

How did you become a Media Officer? What job were you doing before?

Since graduating from university, I have worked in various marketing roles such as an Account Executive in a busy advertising agency in North Devon, Marketing Officer for a hotel and as Marketing Assistant and then manager covering maternity leave at Children’s Hospice South West. I then took a break to start a family for several years. In 2019 I saw the Marketing assistant role advertised at CHSW and decided it was the right time for me personally to start work again and applied straight away.

Have you learnt any new skills since being in post? CHSW Media Team

Since moving into the Media Officer role I have developed my skills with using design programmes to create social media posts as well as completing training days at the local college on LinkedIn and email marketing.

If you could do another job within CHSW for the day, what would it be?

I would probably like to be a fundraiser for a day as, once again they have a varied role which is something I enjoy in my career and get to meet supporters who are doing incredible things to fundraise out in the community.

How does it feel to be a part of the CHSW family?

CHSW is a very special charity to work for. They really care about you as a person and about your personal wellbeing.

If you ever have any problems, you know that you can speak to your manager and that you will be well supported. As well as that personal support as an employee, is the feeling that you are doing something worthwhile with your life to help children and young people and their families who are going through so much.

Tell us anything else you love about your role/CHSW...

I really enjoy going to events and meeting our fabulous supporters, they really are amazing!
