Instow marines put the fun in fundraising for children’s hospice
Royal Marines based at Instow have raised more than £500 by holding a family day for Children’s Hospice South West.
The 11 Amphibious Trails and Training Squadron opened the doors of the Arromanches Camp in July, giving family and friends the chance to enjoy a range of activities on the North Devon base, which carries out training and trialling for landing craft operations.
Visitors were able to test their aim on a shooting range and see some of the landing craft and beach recovery vehicles up close. There was a cake sale, fairground rides and raffle, with donated prizes including a television, race day experience, hotel breaks and a trip to Lundy Island.
This week, Sergeant Joe Long and colleagues from 1 Assault Group were given a tour of the charity’s Little Bridge House hospice in Fremington, before presenting a fundraising cheque for £420 to community fundraiser Josh Allen. An additional £270 was collected on the day in buckets by volunteers.
Sgt Long said: “The weather was pretty awful on the day but around 400 people with links to the camp attended and enjoyed a great day out with a difference.
“This is the second time we’ve held a fun day in aid of the children’s hospice and it was good to be able to visit Little Bridge House to see at first hand the amazing work the charity does to support families.”
