Goonvean Group Goes the Distance with ‘Marathon May’ Fundraising Challenge for Children’s Hospice South West
Inspired by the spirit and determination of the London Marathon, colleagues at Goonvean Group laced up their running shoes to take on a challenge of their own. They took on their own ‘Marathon May’, an ambitious team effort to complete the equivalent of 5 marathons over 5 consecutive days.
Across the week-long challenge two teams, comprising a total of 10 runners, each covered 8.5km per day, collectively achieving the distance of a full marathon every day. The initiative was organised in support of Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW), raising an impressive £4,131.
The challenge brought together colleagues from across the business, showcasing teamwork, resilience and a shared commitment to making a difference.
Team 1 consisted of Managing Director Matthew Gazzard, Christian Withers, Ross Cottrell, Katie Ovenden and Liza Gazzard who bravely subbed in at the last minute due to injury.
Team 2 consisted of Izzy Croker, James Mullins, Zoe Ashby, Will Cross and Simon Perry, another outstanding last-minute substitute who joined from Tuesday onwards and completed additional running to ensure the full marathon distance was completed.
Reflecting on the final day of the challenge, Goonvean Group Ltd Group Managing Director, Matthew Gazzard, described both the physical toll and the sense of accomplishment:
It certainly feels like we've run a marathon! Thankfully the week ended as it started with almost perfect conditions. Gone was the wind and rain, replaced by crystal blue skies and calm air. Unfortunately, our legs didn’t quite get the same memo! The rigours of the week really took their toll. New trainers even cost me a toenail, and my hamstrings were tighter than harp strings. Still, the support and camaraderie of the team kept us all going.
The relief was summed up by teammate Ross Cottrell: “What a week! I have enjoyed it, but glad it’s done!
‘Marathon May’ not only tested physical endurance but also highlighted the team’s commitment to supporting their local community. Funds raised will go towards helping CHSW continue its vital work providing hospice care for babies, children and young people living with life-limiting conditions and their families at its 3 hospices across the South West including Little Bridge House in Barnstaple.
Henrietta Olsson, Area Fundraiser for CHSW, said:
We are incredibly proud of everyone who took part in Marathon May. The effort, teamwork and determination shown throughout the week is inspiring. Most importantly, the challenge has helped raise vital funds for an incredible cause. Every mile truly mattered.
