Tributes to Gill Brown, whose tireless dedication helped raise more than £500,000 for Children’s Hospice South West

04 February 2026 CHSW

In her hometown of Bridgwater, Gill made it her life’s mission to bring people together in support of the charity close to her heart. What began as a Christmas event in her own garden, complete with a visit from Santa and a disco, grew into a powerful local movement to fundraise for babies, children and young people. Through her energy and enthusiasm, Gill inspired volunteers, rallied donations and encouraged her whole community to play a part in supporting CHSW.

With the support of the Bridgwater Friends Group and many others, she helped raise awareness of the critical work of CHSW and demonstrated just how much can be achieved when a community unites behind a shared purpose.

Gill’s efforts were recognised nationally when she won the South West Regional Pride of Britain Fundraiser Award in 2025. Over the years, she raised more than £500,000 for CHSW.

Reflecting after Gill’s recent funeral, Paul Courtney, Director of Fundraising at CHSW, said:

“It was a privilege to join with Gill’s family and friends to remember and celebrate her life. So many people came to pay their respects to such an incredible community champion. Gill was a dedicated and determined fundraiser for CHSW for many years. With the help of the Bridgwater Friends Group and many others, she succeeded in her personal target of raising over £500,000 to support local children and families before she died."

Gill’s kindness and passion will live on in the work of CHSW for many years to come, helping families when they need it most.

"Her national recognition not only celebrates her extraordinary personal achievements, but also shines a light on the essential services that Children’s Hospice South West provides to children and families at the most difficult times in their lives.”
