Scrap metal leads to heaps of donations for children’s hospice

Peter Sweet at Little Harbour with some of the items his fundraising has helped fund

A small idea that came about 10 years ago from Peter Sweet from St Austell has turned into some serious income for Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) and its Little Harbour hospice at Porthpean.

Peter, 82, has raised over £44,800 since 2010 for the children’s hospice including £8700 last year.

Peter does daily and weekly collections of scrap metal from homes and businesses around St Austell and the local area. He then delivers the scrap to Henry Orchard & Sons scrap merchants where it is processed, at the end of each year Peter then donates all the money made from the scrap to Little Harbour children’s hospice.

Not only have Peter’s donations contributed towards the general running costs of the hospice but they have also contributed towards  purchases of new items such as carpets, a ride-on mower, pumps, bariatric hoists and shower trollies.

With every collection he does logged, Peter’s logbook of his rounds to various businesses and houses is quite the time capsule. Doing it all in his own time and his own vehicle he has clocked up many miles for this good cause in the 10 years of his collections.

When asked why he does what he does Peter said; “It is just such a good cause and I like to be able to do all I can to help with the running costs of the hospice.”

Alan Morgan, Maintenance Manager at Little Harbour said;

Peter is somewhat of an enigma, instead of sitting at home with his feet up he is tirelessly out fundraising for us here at Little Harbour which is even more of a feat because Peter has a few health issues of his own.

The staff here at Little Harbour are so grateful to Peter and all his supporters for continuing to raise such an unbelievable amount of money of which every single penny make a huge difference. Peter’s donations have helped us to buy essential items for the hospice so on behalf of everyone I would like to say a big heartfelt thank you to Peter; you are one in a million.”
