Named ‘The Bristol Brutal’, the originator, Paul Dennett from Emersons Green said,
I wanted to do something to help Charlton Farm as it is a very special place which supported my friend Jim whose son Jack died at the hospice.
Along with his friends, Marc Thomas and Phill Edwards from Bradley Stoke, Paul covered 320 miles over 3 days on foot and by bike. Day 1 consisted of a 6.2 mile swim and 90 mile cycle. Day 2 was a 171.4 mile cycle and Day 3 saw them running 52.4 miles; the equivalent of a double marathon.
In October the men attended The Glitter Ball at Ashton Gate Stadium to celebrate Charlton Farm’s 10th Birthday and it was at the Ball where they discovered what their fundraising total was. Olly Slym, CHSW Community Fundraiser, said ‘The guys have put their heart and soul into raising these funds for Charlton Farm and I was pleased to be able to tell them that their hard work and dedication raised £12,538 for the hospice.’
Paul has since gone on to establish Active Soul UK, a social and friendly membership club for novice and more experienced athletes in the area. Here, along with qualified instructors, he is able to pass on his knowledge of fitness to help the community walk, run, swim and cycle. Members of Active Soul UK receive a tailored training programme, strength and conditioning programme with a portion of the membership cost donated to Charlton Farm.
