25 years of pub quizzing raises thousands for children’s hospice
A pub in Holywell Bay near Newquay has raised £4000 for charity this year alone from running weekly pub quizzes.
The Truguth Inn has invited keen quizzers through its doors every week to raise funds for Children’s Hospice South West’s (CHSW) Little Harbour hospice in St Austell.
Steve Sutton, the owner of The Treguth Inn, said:
Our Wednesday night quiz has been running for 25 years, and has always raised money for Little Harbour. All together, these quizzes have raised around £38,000.
“The teams that take part have always been a mixture of visitors and locals. One team, the ‘Wright Rats’ have participated since the very start, and apart from during the pandemic, have competed every week which I think is remarkable.”
The pub also runs a weekly Meat Draw raffle every Friday, proceeds from which are also added to their charity pot.
Little Harbour supports more than 130 families from across Cornwall and Plymouth through hospice days and hospice stays, as well as home visits and virtual support. It costs around £4 million a year to run the hospice which relies almost entirely on voluntary donations.
Alice Merrett, Area Fundraiser for CHSW, said: “It is incredible that these quizzes have brought in such a vast amount of money for Little Harbour. It really is lovely that these evenings of fun, laughter and competition are bringing people together for an amazing cause and raising the vital funds we need to keep Little Harbour going. On behalf of the families supported by the hospice; thank you all.”
