Peter, Cranbrook Shop Volunteer
Meet Peter, volunteer at our Cranbrook shop.
Peter talks to us about how he got involved in volunteering with Children's Hopsice South West, and what he enjoys most.

"When it comes to job satisfaction, volunteering for Children’s Hospice South West takes some beating. Not that it’s a job, and there is no financial reward, but that’s not important. Playing an active role in supporting such a wonderful charity is reward enough.

Turning 75 in December, I am proving the adage that age is just a number, it’s no barrier to making a valuable contribution to an organisation I have admired and respected for many years.

With no shop experience to my name, I signed up as a volunteer just after the new charity shop at Cranbrook, near Exeter, opened its doors in October. Working alongside some great colleagues, I’m loving every minute.

Important jobs include sorting out generous donations of items such as clothes, toys and books, tagging items and marking up sizes and prices, and ensuring that goods displays are neat and tidy. However, serving our growing number of customers is the best part. Many of them are happy to have a chat, and their compliments about the shop and the charity are music to our ears, as is the ring every time the till opens to confirm another sale. It’s more money that will be put to excellent use, supporting families throughout the South West, including 30 in the Exeter area.

Volunteering is a far cry from my 50-year career in journalism and public relations, but it is just as enjoyable, with the priceless bonus of supporting a charity that helps families make the most of short and precious lives.
I am in the fortunate position of having plenty of spare time to volunteer on several days a week. Whatever your age, young or old, if you can spare just a few hours to suit your busy lifestyle and family commitments, I know that Children’s Hospice South West would love to hear from you."
