Children's Hospice South West

Making the most of short and precious lives across the south west

Family Information

Children's Hospice South West's aim is to provide a home from home, with a relaxed and informal atmosphere, where sick children and their families can come for a much needed break from the ongoing strains they face at home.

The children we care for….

We care for children with a wide range of disorders, too numerous to list individually. However, all the children have serious illnesses and are not expected to survive into adulthood. We will welcome not only your sick child, but your whole family - this may include some smaller pets too (e.g hamsters and guinea pigs!). We have plenty of spacious accommodation for parents and brothers and sisters, and everyone is welcome to make the use of all the play and leisure activities at our hospices.

Our hospices….

A visit to Little Bridge House or Charlton Farm is the only true way to appreciate the nature of there surroundings, we hope that you feel able to phone us to arrange a visit and to see for yourselves what we have to offer!

Little Bridge House is situated in the small village of Fremington between Barnstaple and Bideford, only 2 miles from the beach at Instow and within easy reach of Exmoor and its attractions. Charlton Farm is nestled in the hillside of Wraxall and provides a secluded and beautiful setting in which our families can take some time out and just enjoy spending time as a family. Bristol, however, is only a few miles away, so the attractions of the City can also be enjoyed during a stay

A home from home…

We hope to offer friendship and support, practical help and the chance to relax in beautiful surroundings that both North Devon and North Somerset have to offer.

We aim to encourage a family atmosphere, all those who wish to may get involved in everyday life at the hospice. However the family accommodation has a sitting room, dining room and kitchen if families prefer to cater for themselves individually rather than joining us in the main part of the house.

Referring a child and family for support…

We welcome referrals from family members whose child has been diagnosed with a life-limiting condition. With your families permission we will then contact your professional support team (GP, consultants, key workers etc) to gather up-to-date information about your child's current needs and likely future prognosis.

When all the information available is reviewed, a decision will be made about the appropriateness of hospice care for your child and family. Your family and the involved professionals will be informed of this decision without delay. A typical period for completion of this referral process is approximately 6 weeks.
