Chris's Plymouth Half Marathon and Kilimanjaro Challenge
Many of you may remember one of my best mates, Chris Warn (I used to live with him in Bristol and he was the one that gave the second, louder half of the Best Man speech at the wedding, for those of you who were there). The morning after the wedding, Chris and his wife, Sophie, found out that they were pregnant. Awesome news!! As you’d expect, they were absolutely delighted and on 7 Jul 09, Sophie gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, Daisy Elizabeth Warn. Sadly, on 2 Nov 09, exactly a year after finding out that they were pregnant, and just before she turned 4 months old, Daisy died from a rare genetic disorder called Spinal Muscular Atrophy.
I can’t even begin to imagine how hard this could have been on Chris and Sophs; just thinking about losing Charlie or Pippa is unbearable. However, what I do know is that they did their level best to make sure that Daisy had the best life she could possibly have for the few months and weeks that she was here. As Daisy approached the end of her short life, the three of them spent more and more time at the Little Bridge Hospice in Barnstaple, one of the hospices run by Children’s Hospice South West. Ultimately, little Daisy died there.
CHSW provides a service that made an intolerable period of Chris, Sophie and Daisy’s life just a little bit easier. As such, to ensure that their crucial work can continue, I’ll be running the Plymouth Half Marathon in May and climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Aug this year, to raise funds for CHSW, and I’m coming to you all to ask for a few quid in exchange for me spending the next few months on a cross-trainer, out running and walking with small children strapped to me in preparation for, and indeed completing, these events. I’ll be funding the cost of the Kilimanjaro trip; everything you give will go direct to the charity, so please give what you can. Thank you!!
